Our Origins
Tell us about your background.
I completed my matriculation in 1989, after which I started participating in our family business at the initial level, gaining practical experience. After earning a bachelor’s degree in commerce in 1996, I became fully active in our business. With my practical knowledge and academic qualifications, I have been continuously contributing to the development of our business. My education and inherited experience from my father have provided me with a strong foundation for business management, financial decisions, and strategic planning.
What is the story behind the name Nagarmal?
The name “Nagarmal” is an inspiring story of struggle and success, which began in a small village in Rajasthan and has now become a successful business legacy. This story narrates the journey started by our ancestors—a journey built upon hard work, foresight, and unbreakable dedication.
It began in 1919, when our great-grandfather, late Nagarmal Ji, came from Laxmangarh village in Sikar district, Rajasthan to Daltonganj, Bihar (now Jharkhand). In his early days, he did several small jobs to make a living. Later, he settled in the city of Ara, where he again worked jobs. But his real journey started when he began a small business of “markin” fabric and salt on the footpath. This humble start became the first step toward a large business empire.
After Nagarmal Ji, his son, late Satyanarayan Beria, carried forward the legacy. He rented a shop and grew the cloth business, achieving notable success. His foresight and hard work brought a new direction to the business.
Satyanarayan Ji’s son, Shri Shivnarayan Beria, a resilient and inquisitive personality since childhood, took the business to new heights. Under his leadership, the enterprise experienced unprecedented growth and established a strong identity.
Today, his four sons have, with their father’s guidance and inspiration, furthered the family business and taken steps toward modern retail. In 2009, we started our first mega retail showroom in Bihar, which gave our business a fresh identity and aligned us with the modern market requirements.
This is not just a story of business success, but of an unbroken chain of hard work, dedication, and foresight across generations—making Nagarmal a reputed brand.
Growth & Idea
How did the idea to make Nagarmal bigger come about?
Our father, Shri Shivnarayan Beria Ji, displayed an inquisitive and resilient personality from childhood. His foresight led him to realize that the future of modern retail in India was bright. When modern retail began to emerge in India, he identified this change ahead of time and ensured the next generation was prepared for it.
To realize his dream, he not only inspired us, his sons, but also encouraged us to learn by visiting different states in India, observing successful retail models, and drawing lessons from them.
Through his guidance and our collective efforts, we opened our first mega retail showroom in 2009. This was a bold and decisive step for the time, moving our business from traditional thinking toward modernity.
Thanks to his conviction and our dedication, we have never looked back and keep moving forward. The inspiration and vision of Shri Shivnarayan Beria Ji are what made Nagarmal a successful and prestigious brand.
What was the basis of the company’s idea?
Nagarmal’s success was not built on a single idea, but the result of several key principles. The cornerstone of our company’s growth has been the continuous learning process, understanding customers, strong relationships with suppliers, and team dedication.
As described, the foundation of our business is based on constant learning and observation. Due to our father Shri Shivnarayan Beria Ji’s foresight, we toured businesses across the country that excelled in their respective fields. This process gave us the opportunity not only to understand their successful models but also taught us how to adapt to changing market needs.
For us, business is not just a means of buying and selling but is based on strong relationships. Along with our father’s guidance, our customers and suppliers also taught us a lot. Understanding customer needs and working with suppliers has helped us move forward in the right direction.
The contribution of the team is most important for any business to succeed. The team that joined us at Nagarmal’s inception showed unwavering dedication to their work. Their full cooperation and hard work helped us overcome early challenges and advance.
This combination—constant learning, building strong relationships, and team dedication—is the core basis for the development of our business.
Vision & Mission
What is Nagarmal’s core mission?
Nagarmal’s main mission is not just to do business, but to make “complete customer satisfaction” the ultimate goal. Our objective is to provide such an experience that customers feel a strong and lasting bond with us.
We strive to ensure customers are so satisfied that they and their entire family rely solely on us for all their clothing needs. Our aim is not just to increase sales, but to create such trust among customers that they consider our brand a part of their family.
Our vision is to become a major part of the market where we operate. For this, we follow the principle of offering high-quality products at low prices. We believe that making good-quality clothing affordable is a kind of social service, enabling customers from all segments to shop easily.
This vision helps us achieve our business goals, while also fulfilling our responsibility toward society.
What is Nagarmal’s long-term vision?
Nagarmal’s long-term vision goes beyond just expanding the business; it is to become a retail brand that prioritizes “quality and satisfaction” in every action.
Our goal is to reach the summit of the retail industry, and we will achieve this by focusing on three pillars:
Customer Satisfaction: We want to offer such excellent service and high-quality products that customers feel a lasting and trusted connection with us. We want every customer to leave satisfied after shopping.
Team Development and Satisfaction: Our team is our greatest strength. We want to create a workplace where every employee feels respected, experiences personal growth, and is fully dedicated to our shared goals.
Strong Partnerships with Suppliers: We consider our suppliers not just business partners, but co-travellers. Working together, we strive to build an ecosystem ensuring progress for all.
By adopting these principles, we aim to establish ourselves as a retail leader—not just setting new standards of success but standing on the foundation of ethical values and strong relationships.
Journey & Team
What challenges did you face while developing the company?
As we expanded the company, we faced various challenges—natural for any growing business. We never considered these as obstacles, but as opportunities to learn and progress.
Our main principle has been to confront every challenge with wisdom and prudence. We never made hasty decisions. Instead, we thoroughly analyzed each situation and chose the most appropriate course of action.
We maintained flexibility in our strategies to adapt to changing market conditions. If one approach didn’t work, we immediately sought a new path without fear or hesitation.
Dedication and hard work by team members have been our greatest strength. Whenever a challenge appeared, the entire team worked together to find its solution. We knew that, as a team, we could solve any problem.
Thus, we turned challenges into steps toward progress and kept moving forward with prudent decisions. This is the reason we have reached where we are today.
What was the major milestone in Nagarmal’s development?
The most significant milestone in Nagarmal’s growth was establishing the R.C. branch in Ara in 2009. For us, this was not just another store, but a step that changed the very direction of our business.
This showroom was the first mega retail showroom in Bihar. At the time, it was a revolutionary idea and completely shifted us from traditional commerce to modern retail. This proved to be a “game changer”, providing us an opportunity to operate at a large scale and greatly increasing customer trust.
This one decision gave us a new identity in the market and made our name synonymous with quality and reliability. The step taken in 2009 is the foundation of our success so far.
What values are most important when selecting your team?
When selecting new members for our team, we prioritize certain core values. We believe these values form the foundation of our company’s success and its positive work culture.
We look for candidates with the following qualities:
Positive Mindset: We value people who see challenges as opportunities. A positive thinker not only keeps themselves motivated but also uplifts the morale of the entire team.
Commitment and Integrity: We want our team members to be completely dedicated to their work. Additionally, integrity is paramount, as it builds trust among customers and colleagues.
Hardworking Nature: We select candidates who are diligent and committed. This is not just about getting the job done but also striving for quality and excellence.
Excellent Communication Skills: Clear and effective communication is vital for a good team. We prioritize individuals who can convey their thoughts well and also listen and understand others. This helps build strong relationships with both customers and team members.
These values help us build a team that is not only professionally efficient but also committed to our shared goals.
How do you motivate your team?
We believe that the most effective way to motivate a team is to become an example oneself. We do not just give instructions but lead from the front by working the hardest.
When the team sees its leader working hard, it is inspired as well. We believe our own diligence and dedication are the greatest sources of motivation for our team.
Understanding the needs and problems of the team is also crucial for keeping them motivated. We listen carefully to our team members and try to solve their problems as much as possible.
This way, we create an environment where everyone feels their hard work and problems are valued. That is why our team remains motivated and dedicated.

What is your favourite book?
The Power of Positive Thinking - Norman Vincent Peale’s book is an inspiring guide that shows how powerful our thinking can be. It teaches that if we cultivate positivity in our thoughts, we can face even the greatest challenges in life. This book is not only important for personal life but offers vital lessons for gaining confidence and success in business.
Made in America (Walmart) - Sam Walton's "Made in America" tells the story of an ordinary person’s extraordinary journey. It explains how the world’s biggest retail company was built through a simple idea and hard work. The book describes key business principles like prioritizing customers, reducing costs, and trusting employees in a straightforward way.
Both books demonstrate that perspective goes beyond business—it is rooted in values like positivity, dedication to customers, and hard work.
What do you do when you are not working?
When not working, I contemplate and make plans for the future. I believe free time should not be spent just relaxing but thinking.
Contemplation means thinking apart from work, which brings fresh and bigger ideas. During this time, I also find solutions to problems that aren't visible while working. As for planning, strategies for the future are always running in my mind. I jot these ideas down so they can become reality at the right time.
This habit keeps me always one step ahead. It helps give not just me, but the whole company, new direction and momentum. It proves that for me, work isn’t just a job—it’s an inseparable part of life.
